Venice and its lagoon

The city of Venice the north of Italy was founded by the Lombards in 568. It was at the beginning very important for the byzantine civilization, and progressively developed, with a great will to be autonomous. Venice was recognized as "the Queen of the Adriatic".

The interior city extends over 18 small islands. It became a great maritime power in the 10th century. Venice is an extraordinary architectural masterpiece because even the smallest monument contains works of some of the largest artists of the world, like Giorgione, Titien, Tintoret, Véronèse and others. Venice and its lagoon are registered with the world heritage of UNESCO.

Its Italian name is Venezia. It has a population of 271 251 - (31 déc 2004)

It is a city of and chief town of the area of Venezia. It is famous for its canals, Saint-Marc square , the palace of the Doges... It is also famous for its ‘carnival’
