The temple of Tomar
Tomar is a little town of Portugal where there’s a very old temple: The temple of Christ. This temple was built in the 12th century by the Templars of Portugal.
When the Templars died out the temple continued to be lived in by the kings of Portugal and Spain. But to see an improvement in this building we have to wait for the 15th century with Henry the Navigator (Infante Dom Henrique) who was the king of the Templars order. Henry improved the town of Tomar. After him there was another man: Manuel 1st of Portugal. He made the church and many little things better.
The castle and the convent are good examples of roman, gothic, and renaissance architectures.
In the convent there are eight cloisters. For example there’s the cloister of the graveyard, the Saint Barbara cloister, the cloister of Jean III…
The cloisters are simple for example there are trees or fountains Next to the castle there’re gardens. In the gardens there’re a lot of orange trees.
The castle is a castle of the middle age which is why it has big ramparts. But the castle was improved when gothic architecture became fashionable. The covent too waschanged and a lot of sculptures were added
I visisted Tomar at Christmas and found everything very impressive
